Copenhagen Means Business: The Smart Event Destination Hiding in Plain Sight

My reason for being in Copenhagen was, first and foremost, to support a client event.

It was one of those trips where the work came first, but the destination quietly made its case in the background. Once the event wrapped, I decided to stay on for a couple of extra days and use the opportunity to properly explore what Copenhagen could offer for corporate events, incentives and client programmes.

I am very glad I did.

Copenhagen is one of those cities that feels instantly manageable. It is stylish without trying too hard, compact without feeling small, and full of experiences that would translate brilliantly into an events programme. It also has that rare combination of strong infrastructure, standout hospitality and genuine character.

For UK groups, it is also incredibly accessible, with flights from the UK taking around 1 hour 30 minutes depending on departure airport and routing. That makes it a very realistic option for short sharp meetings, incentive extensions or a destination programme that does not ask too much of delegates before they even arrive.

The Copenhagen Card became my best friend

One of the biggest discoveries of the trip was just how easy Copenhagen is to move around.

I used the Copenhagen Card constantly. And I mean constantly.

Inter city trains. Metro. Harbour boats. Water taxis. Getting across the city. Getting beyond it. It was seamless.

For event planners, that is a huge advantage. Transport can make or break the delegate experience, especially when a programme includes multiple venues, hosted dinners, cultural experiences or optional extensions. In Copenhagen, the logistics feel refreshingly simple.

The card also opens up access to a wide range of attractions, which makes it a really useful tool when designing partner programmes, incentive add ons or post event leisure time. It gives guests the freedom to explore at their own pace, while keeping the experience easy to manage from a planning perspective.

Hotels that understand the events market

I was able to visit both Grand Joanne and NH Collection Copenhagen, and both stood out for different reasons.

Grand Joanne has a lovely boutique feel. It is full of personality, with a strong sense of style and a warm atmosphere that would work beautifully for smaller groups, leadership gatherings or more intimate client hosting. The rooftop is a real bonus and gives the hotel a relaxed but elevated social space that would be ideal for drinks, networking or a private moment within a wider programme.

It also has its own pub, which can be privatised for events. That gives the hotel another really useful option for informal networking, private drinks or a more relaxed hosted evening without needing to move guests off property.

NH Collection Copenhagen offers a different scale and feel. It is sleek, spacious and very well positioned for corporate groups. What really stood out to me was the natural light in the event spaces and the views out across the water. So many meeting rooms can feel enclosed and generic, but here there is a real sense of openness.

The 360 degree rooftop is a major highlight. It gives you that big Copenhagen moment, with views across the city and the harbour. For a reception, incentive gathering or post meeting drinks, it would be a brilliant setting.

A city made for memorable evenings

Copenhagen has great evening energy. It does not feel forced. It just works.

The Library Bar was a favourite. It has that classic, intimate atmosphere that feels perfect for a sophisticated client drink or a more relaxed end to a busy event day. It is the kind of place that gives a programme a little depth and polish without feeling overly formal.

I also spent time around Nyhavn, which was absolutely buzzing. The canal side bars and restaurants bring so much life to the city, with colour, atmosphere and that unmistakable Copenhagen charm. It is easy to see how this area could work for informal hosting, small group dinners or simply giving delegates a real sense of the city.

Food, festivals and Copenhagen flavour

Food is a big part of the Copenhagen experience, and I was lucky to catch Tivoli Gardens during the Food Festival.

Tivoli is already such an iconic part of the city, but with the food element layered in, it felt even more alive. It would make a fantastic addition to an incentive itinerary or partner programme, especially for groups who want something central, atmospheric and easy to access.

I also found a great coffee scene while I was there, including a lovely independent roastery that gave me another glimpse into Copenhagen’s more local, creative side. It is the kind of detail that really matters when you are building a programme, because the best moments are often the ones that feel discovered rather than scheduled.

I also joined a Copenhagen Secret Street Food Tour, which gave me a more local view of the city. Experiences like this are ideal for corporate groups because they are social, informal and immediately engaging. People relax when they are walking, eating and discovering somewhere new together.

It is exactly the sort of experience that helps a destination feel personal rather than programmed.

CopenHot was the unexpected standout

CopenHot was one of those experiences that I knew would be interesting, but it turned out to be much more memorable than expected.

Hot tubs, saunas, the harbour, fresh air and city views. It feels very Copenhagen. Calm, design led and just a little bit different.

For incentive groups, executive retreats or smaller leadership teams, this would be a brilliant inclusion. It is relaxed, distinctive and easy to talk about afterwards, which is exactly what you want from a memorable programme moment.

Home of Carlsberg is much more than a tour

Home of Carlsberg was another strong reminder of how well Copenhagen blends heritage with hospitality.

The tour itself gives a real insight into the history of the brand and its connection to the city, but what impressed me most from an events perspective was the variety of spaces available. It is not just an attraction. It is a proper events venue with character.

There are flexible spaces for different styles of gathering, but the standout for me was the cellar room. It would be amazing for private tastings, hosted groups or a more atmospheric drinks experience. It has exactly the kind of character that makes an event feel rooted in the destination.

Kronborg Castle brings the drama

I also travelled out to Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, which is famously known as the inspiration for Elsinore in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

This is where Copenhagen’s wider appeal really comes into focus. You are not limited to the city centre. With easy transport links, you can build in experiences that feel much bigger than a standard urban programme.

Kronborg brings history, scale and drama. It would be a brilliant cultural extension for groups who want to add something memorable beyond the usual city itinerary.

Sustainability feels part of everyday life

Copenhagen’s sustainability credentials are not just something you read about in a destination brochure. You feel them as you move around.

The public transport works. The cycling culture is everywhere. The harbour is clean and active. The city is walkable. Good design and responsible choices seem to sit naturally alongside each other.

For corporate events, that matters.

More and more clients are asking how destinations support lower impact choices, and Copenhagen makes that conversation much easier. Delegates can travel efficiently, explore responsibly and experience a city where sustainability feels practical rather than performative.

Why Copenhagen works for corporate events

What I took away from this trip is that Copenhagen does not need to over sell itself.

It is easy to reach from the UK. Easy to move around. Full of great hotels, rooftops, restaurants, cultural experiences and event spaces. It has strong sustainability credentials, a fantastic food scene and enough variety to create a programme that feels considered rather than copied and pasted.

My visit started with a client event, but staying on gave me a much better understanding of the destination.

Copenhagen is not just a beautiful city break. It is a smart, stylish and highly capable corporate events destination.

For meetings, incentives, client hosting and post event extensions, it should absolutely be on the shortlist.
